Banner only in the EEA, UK and Switzerland

Limit the COKIQ banner to visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, keep Consent Mode granted where no banner is shown, and test both sides.

Best for

Site owners who only need a consent banner for European visitors and want measurement to keep working elsewhere.

How it works

One setting in Banner > Google Consent Mode v2: "Where to show the banner".

Two consent defaults

COKIQ sends gtag("consent", "default", granted) for every region and gtag("consent", "default", denied with region = the 30 EEA countries, GB and CH). Google applies the most specific region, as described in Google's region-specific behaviour guide.

Banner by visitor country

COKIQ looks up the visitor country on its own server. EEA, UK and Swiss visitors see the banner and start denied. Visitors from anywhere else see no banner and consent stays granted. If the country cannot be found, the banner is shown.

Consent granted where no banner is shown

If you set Data Transmission Controls or Global Consent Defaults in your Google tag settings, COKIQ still grants consent where the banner does not appear, so measurement is kept there. Visitors with Global Privacy Control on get ad signals denied.

Setup steps

Step 1

Set the profile to Auto detect

Banner > Compliance Profile > Auto detect. A fixed profile shows the banner to everyone.

Step 2

Choose the regions

Banner > Google Consent Mode v2 > Where to show the banner > "Only in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland". Save.

Step 3

Test from outside Europe

Open your site from the US (VPN, or Chrome DevTools > Sensors > Location for Google's side). No banner should appear and Tag Assistant should show consent granted.

Step 4

Test from Europe

Open it from an EEA country: the banner appears, defaults are denied until the visitor chooses.

Step 5

Compare with the demo

cokiq.com/demo/consent-mode/regional shows both cases (?cokiq_geo=US or ?cokiq_geo=DE simulates COKIQ's side).

Implementation checklist

  • Profile = Auto detect
  • US visit: no banner, consent granted, GA4 hits gcs=G111
  • EEA visit: banner shown, defaults denied (gcs=G100) until a choice
  • Unknown country: banner shown

FAQ

What if I want the banner everywhere?

Keep "All visitors". Consent mode is then on for all regions with denied defaults.

Does the GTM template do the same?

Yes. The COKIQ GTM template has a "Regions" setting (all regions, EEA + UK + Switzerland, or your own list) and a default for other regions. Use the same choice as in the dashboard.
